I'm no fan of organised religion, that's for sure. Brought up a Catholic, I was baptised at 0,
given First Holy Communion at 7, Confirmed at 12, was an altar boy until I was about 15 and was in
Catholic education from the age of 4 until I was 18. It was no hardship. I love my family, and
I loved my school. I never liked church much, but nobody did. I had a happy childhood.
But, and this was a great surprise when I realised it at 14, it's plainly bollocks. There's
absolutely nothing in it. At best it's a small half-truth that's been extemporised into a huge
multinational corporation, on the basis of convincing people that some things just are, and
don't need rational explanation. The mystery of faith; it's no bloody mystery to me, mate.
Many people talk about a great moment of truth when they "found Jesus" or whatever. I had
a similar experience when I found reality. Suddenly everything slotted into place: of course,
that's why it always seemed irrational, and conservative, and, well, human. Religion is a
human construct. An understandable, sometimes even useful, human construct. There's no Godly
authority in it, and it simply doesn't need to apply to me. Or you.
